This photograph of the Remigiuskerk in Duiven, was made by an anonymous photographer, probably as a document. The limited tonal range creates this overall hazy atmosphere. The light seems to be coming from everywhere and nowhere at once, creating soft shadows. Look at how the surface of the church is captured. Each stone seems to have its own distinct texture. If you look closely, you can almost feel the rough texture of the stone and brick. This work reminds me of some of the early architectural studies made by Bernd and Hilla Becher. Photography, like any art form, is an ongoing conversation, an exchange of ideas across time. This image embraces ambiguity, inviting multiple interpretations over fixed meanings.
