This small black and white photograph shows a snow-covered mountainside dotted with trees, made by Robert Frank. I like to imagine Frank holding his camera, feeling the cold, and looking at the mountain. The eye travels into the image like you're climbing. The trees almost look like stitches, holding the slopes together and creating a pattern that feels both natural and somehow constructed, graphic. You know, photography is a bit like painting – both are about light and shadow, composition, and, crucially, the choices the artist makes. Frank's choice of viewpoint, the way he frames the scene, it all speaks to his vision. It reminds me of some of Gerhard Richter’s landscapes, that interest in how we perceive and translate the world around us into images, memories. Ultimately, all art forms feed into each other, don’t they? We're all looking, responding, and creating in this big conversation across time.
