Robert Frank made this photograph, "Trees in Snow - Landscape," using a gelatin silver printing process. The inherent qualities of photography—the light, the monochrome palette, and the cropping—influence its appearance, adding to its texture and weight. Frank used a hand-held camera and existing light to capture the scene before him, and the photograph is defined by a high-contrast balance. Look at the dark trees in the midground, in contrast to the blinding snow in the foreground and on the hilltop. Although photography, particularly in the mid-20th century, was often seen as a product of industrial processes, Frank elevated the medium to the status of fine art. He captured fleeting moments and intimate perspectives, blurring the lines between commercial documentation, artistic expression, and social commentary. He reminds us that materials and making shape our understanding, challenging traditional distinctions between fine art and craft.
