This photo album page, with the title 'Military Funeral and Various Subjects,' probably came together one image at a time in someone's home, maybe during or after the war. I'm thinking about the person who put this album together. It feels so personal. The album presents multiple subjects: soldiers at a burial ground, a truck loaded up with cargo and troops, a line of uniformed figures. I try to imagine their intentions behind each picture, like the one of the little girl in the military garb: did she grow up to be a soldier herself, or did she marry one? Do these pictures represent their experiences, or something they were trying to create and conjure? Do all of these elements point towards one narrative, or do they stand alone? I feel a sense of the artist wrestling with how things might be, how they are, and how they were. This album feels like a collection of memories; the layout echoes those of other works, continuing an exchange of ideas across time. It embraces ambiguity, inviting us to imagine and create our interpretations.
