Herman Besselaar created this photo album page, Voorjaar in 1937. The photos, arranged in a grid, like a storyboard, capture moments in time. These frames contain Besselaar's personal world, all in black and white of course, due to the time it was created! I imagine Besselaar carefully selecting each photo, considering their placement on the page, and contemplating how the various frames speak to each other. It's a very intimate process. I wonder what he hoped to communicate, and to whom? This photo album is an attempt to distill life into a series of snapshots, arranged to tell a story of the artist's life. Each decision, each image, is infused with the artist’s intentionality, forming an intimate portrait of the man, his life, and the world he inhabits. I am intrigued!
