This collection of small photos, held at the Rijksmuseum, is called “Diverse Onderwerpen” which translates to “Diverse Subjects”. It's a reminder that artists have always been image-makers. Look at the photos of horses pulling carts. I love how humble it is. You can imagine the photographer, carefully composing each shot, trying to capture something essential about the scene. There’s a tenderness in that act of observation, a desire to preserve a moment in time. It makes you wonder, what was it like to be them? What were they thinking as they snapped the shutter? What did they want us to see? I bet they never thought their snapshots would end up in a museum, sparking conversations so many years later. I find myself returning to the river view, imagining the photographer setting up their equipment, finding the perfect angle to capture the light. There's a conversation happening across time.
