Gunther Forg made this untitled artwork using colorful brushstrokes. The grid-like structures dispersed throughout the canvas, a symbol of order, echo ancient city plans, yet are rendered here with fluid, unrestrained strokes. The grid reminds me of the "imago mundi," the world image, a concept seen as early as Babylonian maps. While those maps sought to capture the cosmos, Forg's grids seem to suggest something less defined. Note how the bold strokes recall the stark calligraphy of Japanese Zen gardens, where structured forms contain the chaos of nature. Consider the psychological weight of such forms, the attempt to impose control on the uncontrollable. Observe the primal act of mark-making. It is a fundamental expression of human impulse, perhaps a collective, subconscious desire to shape and understand our surroundings. In this piece, Forg taps into a deep reservoir of cultural memory, where the impulse to map, to define, and to express leaves its trace. It is not the grid itself, but the act of creation, the enduring human need to make sense of the world through symbolic form.
