Joy Hester made this ink on paper artwork, “Mujer y el mar” – "Woman and the Sea" – with a dark palette of black and gray. You can almost see her hand moving, the brush dancing across the page, not knowing exactly where it’s going but trusting the process. I imagine Hester in her studio, maybe late at night, alone with her thoughts. The brushstrokes seem to mirror the push and pull of the waves, or maybe the ebb and flow of emotions. There’s a strong sense of the artist working intuitively, letting the ink bleed and blend, creating soft edges and ghostly forms. Those bold, sweeping marks – they’re not just lines, they’re feelings made visible. Hester reminds me of other artists like Nancy Spero, who also used the female form to explore themes of identity and vulnerability. Artists are always talking to each other, even across time. It’s a conversation, a back-and-forth, and we get to listen in.
