Curatorial notes

Here, we see an untitled print by John Paul Jones, rendered with an aquatint technique. The monochromatic palette and textured surface immediately evoke a sense of mystery. Notice how the figure emerges from a dense, almost chaotic background. Jones uses value to create a play of light and shadow. The soft gradations lend the figure an ethereal quality, while the stark contrasts give it a dramatic presence. Jones destabilizes the conventional portrait through an innovative use of aquatint. The figure's features are not clearly defined, as the artist favours a semiotic language of marks and tones. It invites viewers to engage in a visual dialogue, interpreting the interplay between abstraction and representation. The artwork becomes an open field of signification, which questions the boundaries between presence and absence.
