This print, whose maker is recorded as Theodorus Johannes Wijnhoven-Hendriksen, was made in Rotterdam. As the imprint at the bottom tells us, Wijnhoven-Hendriksen was a bookseller and printmaker, and the item itself is a broadside: a cheap, ephemeral object. The text, honoring Dutch courage, is presented in an unusual way. Each letter is densely packed with tiny figures, printed in red and blue to further animate them. Given its method of production, this print would have been aimed at a wide audience. The design would have been quickly made, and its social message easily grasped. Consider how different this is from a unique painting, made for a wealthy patron. In the end, this object can be seen as part of the broader print culture of the Netherlands, offering insight into the labor, politics, and consumption of its time.
