Moyses van Wtenbrouck made this etching of two horses with goats and a cow by a high city wall in the first half of the 17th century. It gives us a glimpse into the relationship between urban life and the surrounding countryside in the Dutch Golden Age. The towering city wall dominates the scene, a symbol of order and civilization. Yet, the animals grazing peacefully in its shadow remind us of the rural world just beyond the city limits. The contrast could reflect the economic realities of the time, when the Dutch Republic relied on both agricultural production and trade within fortified urban centers. Wtenbrouck may be commenting on the social structures of his time, perhaps celebrating the harmony between town and country or subtly critiquing the divide between them. To fully understand its meaning, we can look into Dutch paintings, prints, and historical documents of that time, to reveal the complex relationship between art and society.
