Moyses van Wtenbrouck created this print of two horses with goats and a cow near a high city wall using etching, a printmaking technique, in the 17th century. The linear quality of the image arises directly from the incised lines on the metal plate, which would have been created with careful, controlled movements using a sharp needle. The starkness of the monochrome palette highlights the texture and the artist's draftsmanship. The process itself, demanding precision and patience, mirrors the slower, more deliberate pace of life depicted in the artwork. Unlike painting, printmaking allows for the distribution of images, fitting into the burgeoning culture of commerce and collecting in 17th-century Europe. Considering the material and the making, we can view this print not just as a picture, but as a cultural artifact embedded in the society that produced it.
