Oluf Hartmann created this sketch, including a color sketch for "Diogenes," using pencil and watercolor on paper. Hartmann, who died at only 31, lived during a time of great change. A shifting social landscape influenced artists to explore the depths of human psychology and challenge societal norms. Here, Hartmann sketches Diogenes, the Greek philosopher known for his radical individualism and rejection of social conventions. Diogenes was known for living in a large ceramic jar and begging for a living. Hartmann may have been drawn to Diogenes as a figure who stood apart from the mainstream. The image asks us to consider the tension between the individual and society. Are we free to define our own values, or are we bound by the expectations of others? This work invites us to reflect on the personal choices we make and the values we choose to embrace.
