Oluf Hartmann made this study using graphite on paper. The quick, expressive lines suggest a process of rapid observation and improvisation. The artist has captured various figures and forms, with some areas densely worked and others left as mere suggestions. The immediacy of the graphite medium allows for a direct connection between the artist's hand and the paper's surface. The weight of the graphite varies, creating depth and contrast. The torn edges and collage-like composition of the work speak to a studio practice of experimentation and reuse, a kind of 'making do' attitude that can challenge our conventional expectations of a finished drawing. The work’s aesthetic is one of process and raw labor. Hartmann's willingness to expose the underlying structure and provisional nature of his work invites us to see beyond the finished image and appreciate the energy and effort involved in its creation. This approach breaks down the traditional hierarchy between finished art and preliminary studies.
