Adriaen van Ostade created this pen and brown ink drawing entitled 'Tavern Games', now held in the Rijksmuseum, during the Dutch Golden Age. The scene depicts an outdoor social gathering, a common subject in Dutch art of the period. Looking at the image, we see working-class people engaged in leisure, like playing a form of bowling. Note how the artist positions the figures in a non-idealized manner, reflecting a shift towards realism in genre painting. The scene conveys the social dynamics and communal spirit of village life. It offers a glimpse into a world where labor and play intersect. Ostade seems to be depicting people as they are. What interests me most is that the drawing goes beyond mere documentation. It invites us to consider the emotional and social dimensions of daily life. We get a feeling of shared experience and the simple pleasures of community. Ostade’s work, while depicting everyday life, engages with broader themes of social identity and human connection. It reminds us of the value of community and leisure, and the simple pleasures that bind people together.

Customers at a tavern are sitting outside and enjoying the food and drink. Under the long roof, two men are playing a version of shuffleboard, pushing discs along the table. On the left in the foreground is one end of a bowling green. This sketch, which Van Ostade made in c. 1677, formed the basis for a finished watercolour as well as an oil painting.
