Edouard Hamman created this print called 'Courtyard of a Flemish Inn' using etching. The artwork transports us to a 19th-century Flemish inn, a public space buzzing with a diverse range of people from various social strata. Hamman, working in a period marked by significant social change, captures the intersection of identity, gender, and class within this intimate courtyard. At first glance, it seems like a snapshot of daily life, but look again and you'll see a world of untold stories. A woman stands beside the table where men socialize, and another woman sits on the ground, working. We can only imagine the complex relationships between these figures and the world they inhabit. Hamman presents us with a scene that reflects both the shared experiences and the subtle inequalities that defined 19th-century Flemish society.
