This image, "Duitse militairen liggend in het gras", of German soldiers resting in the grass, was made anonymously and at an unknown date with an unknown material. The photograph has a grainy texture. It’s a visual reminder that history is often caught in moments of repose, when things are not happening, but perhaps about to happen. Take a look at that cluster of soldiers towards the front. Some are lying down, some are sitting up. I'm intrigued by the way some of the figures are cropped by the edges of the frame. The photographer's choice to crop the figures makes me think about how the act of framing is a political one. What is included and excluded from the image? What is seen and unseen? This photograph is a reminder that art, like history, is a constant process of selection, interpretation, and re-interpretation. It makes me think of Martha Rosler’s photomontages, which place images of war within domestic interiors, revealing the hidden connections between distant events and our daily lives.
