Friedensreich Hundertwasser made this colour silkscreen titled '697A Regentag on Waves of Love' without any clear indication of when he created it. Just look at the bold colours and those playful lines. I imagine Hundertwasser standing before a blank canvas, maybe with music playing, completely lost in the act of creation. It feels like he was improvising, letting the image emerge from a dream state, each layer building upon the last, a joyful dance between control and chance. I love how the waves pulsate with energy, each ripple a testament to the fluidity of life. Then there is that boat, with the concentric circles, like the rings of a tree trunk that has been cut down – a motif for Hundertwasser that represented nature, life, and growth. You can see his signature spiral motifs everywhere, a constant reminder that life is not linear but cyclical, always turning back on itself. Thinking of other artists, I think of Gustav Klimt’s ornamental style and the vibrant colours of Henri Matisse. Hundertwasser, like these artists, creates a visual language that is both decorative and deeply symbolic, a testament to the power of art to transform the everyday into something magical.
