Harry G. Aberdeen made "Watch, Frame and Case" using what looks like watercolour and ink on paper. The careful line work and crisp colour gives the piece the feel of a technical drawing, but there is something more lyrical going on here too. I love the contrast between the cool, metallic grey of the watch face and the warm, almost honey-like tones of the inner mechanisms and outer casing. On the right hand side, the watch case is decorated with an animal motif, perhaps a lion or a horse, surrounded by foliage. The artist’s hand is really evident in the slight inconsistencies of the colour and line, particularly in this area. It speaks to the process, and the human touch, which elevates it beyond a mere diagram. Aberdeen reminds me of Alfred Jenson, another artist who found beauty in the combination of the diagrammatic with personal, expressive mark making. For me, the beauty of this piece lies in this balance.
