Curatorial notes
Gaspar Bouttats created this portrait of Cardinal Guido Bentivoglio using etching techniques. The composition is striking; the Cardinal's face, framed in an oval, is the focal point, yet it is integrated within an elaborate structure of symbolic objects. Note how Bouttats uses the oval to soften the formality, contrasting with the architectural frame above and the military regalia below. This interplay suggests a tension between the Cardinal’s spiritual role and worldly power. Observe the allegorical figures flanking the portrait. To the left, a warrior-like figure with her shield, and to the right a more serene, musical character—each embodies different aspects of Bentivoglio’s character or the values he represents. This carefully constructed arrangement emphasizes the Cardinal's place within a complex web of cultural and political meanings. In this print, Bouttats does not simply depict a likeness; he constructs an image laden with symbolism that invites us to consider the Cardinal's multifaceted identity.
