This small photograph captures a moment in a garden at Bellevue 62, Hamburg, probably taken in March or April 1935. Three kids are playing in a garden - Erica and Hansl are named, the third is unknown. I am really drawn to the anonymous nature of this piece; an everyday scene shot in black and white. I wonder about the photographer - they're not trying to show off any mastery of skill here, instead they’re capturing a snippet of real life as it's happening in front of them. It’s like a painting made with light, where the surface catches fleeting moments. The composition is simple; the image captures a moment in time and an everyday scene of children playing. I bet the photographer didn't think about where the kids stood or what was in the background. It might have been taken on the fly, yet it feels incredibly intentional. There's a lot of spontaneity in how it was composed. Like all good artwork, there’s something very human about the way this image was made.
