This photograph, simply called 'In de deur', captures a moment in time. It’s a small, unassuming print, pasted into what looks like an album, by an anonymous artist. I like to imagine the photographer standing there, maybe a bit nervous, trying to capture the right light. Perhaps they were thinking about how to frame the image, how to arrange the figures, or how to make it look nice. It is so still but it kind of captures a gesture, or a moment of tension, too. The shades of gray create a range of soft tones. The framing itself becomes part of the image, grounding the photograph in its historical context. We can see painting as a form of embodied expression, embracing ambiguity and uncertainty, and the same could be said of photography, allowing for multiple interpretations and meaning over fixed readings.
