Curatorial notes

Jean Mignon created this delicate red chalk drawing, "Holy Family with Birds," sometime between 1535 and 1555, during the height of the Renaissance. Imagine the world in which Mignon lived, steeped in religious tradition and burgeoning artistic innovation. While ostensibly depicting a biblical scene, Mignon subtly weaves in the everyday, grounding the divine in the earthly. Look closely at the figures: their faces, etched with a quiet humanity, suggest a universal experience of family. The presence of the birds may allude to freedom but also vulnerability, their delicate forms mirroring the fragility of life. Mignon, who died at a young age, perhaps saw the beauty of the world and the preciousness of life more acutely. The artwork offers a space for reflection on the intimate connections that define us and the transient nature of existence.
