Curatorial notes

Giovanni Andrea Ansaldo sketched this design for a temple scene with pencil and paper, capturing a pivotal moment of devotion. At its center, observe the young Mary, hands clasped in prayer, presented to the temple elders. Note how the gesture of clasped hands, a universal symbol of supplication, transcends eras. We see it echoed in ancient votive statues and Renaissance portraits alike. Consider, too, the figure of the high priest, bestowing a blessing. This, my friends, is but a variation on the ancient motif of the ‘man of authority’ that echoes through time. Such gestures resonate deeply, tapping into our collective memory of ceremony and reverence. From pagan rituals to modern-day blessings, these symbols retain their psychological power. They allow us to access a shared human experience of faith and hope. This reminds us of art’s profound ability to connect us to the past, revealing the cyclical nature of human expression.
