George Albert Harris made this image titled, "When?" using monochrome ink to create a print. The graphic sensibility speaks to artmaking as a process, a methodical rendering of shapes and lines on the page. What strikes me is the material aspect of the print. The contrast between textures! On the left, a neat brick wall, so orderly, and then, bam! Wood grain gone wild on the right, like a topographic map. And check out that plane—a silhouette against a ghostly cloud, a fleeting moment captured in sharp detail. It's like Harris is asking us, "When what? When will these contrasting worlds collide?" This print reminds me of M.C. Escher, who also played with geometric forms and perspective, creating impossible realities on paper. But Harris brings a certain raw, emotional edge to the game. Ultimately, "When?" is a reminder that art doesn't always offer easy answers.
