Gosta Adrian-Nilsson imagined these "Acrobats in Paris" using oils to create a palette of warm and cool grays. Just looking at it, I can imagine the way the artist built up the painting, shifting and emerging through trial, error, and intuition, in order to capture the feeling of human pyramids. I really sympathize with Adrian-Nilsson. I can imagine what it might have been like to create this work. What was he thinking? The paint isn't exactly thick, but there's a certain physicality to the medium, a building-up, that really shapes the experience of the painting. The angles of the acrobats communicate both balance and a kind of awkwardness, offering a sense of the labor involved in the performance. Adrian-Nilsson created a space where art and life meet! It's exciting when artists take note of one another across time, creating a continuous conversation that inspires new works and ideas. Ultimately, painting is about embracing uncertainty and exploring different interpretations, rather than sticking to a fixed idea.
