This is “Allegory of Victory,” made in the late 15th or early 16th century by the artist Antico in Italy, out of bronze. The process to create such a medal involved carving a detailed design into a mold, likely from a harder material like stone or metal. Molten bronze was then poured into the mold, allowed to cool, and then the medal was released. The resulting cast retains the intricate details of the original carving. What’s interesting is that, beyond the visual qualities, the medal also has a tactile dimension. Bronze is a relatively heavy material, and the medal would have had a satisfying heft in the hand. The cool feel of the metal, the smooth surfaces, and the sharp relief of the figures, all speak to the haptic engagement that the owner would have experienced. Ultimately, the artistry of Antico, combined with the material qualities of bronze, elevate this medal beyond mere currency or ornamentation. It becomes a testament to the power of materials and making in the creation of meaning.
