Gerrit Willem Dijsselhof made this pencil drawing, "Tuintjes of velden tussen huizen, met kleurnotities," which translates to "Gardens or Fields Between Houses, with Color Notes," at an unknown date. Dijsselhof lived in a time of rapid urbanization, so the drawing could be seen as a commentary on the relationship between nature and urban development. Although appearing simple, this work carries echoes of the tensions between nature and industry, a theme very much alive at the turn of the 20th century. Dijsselhof, part of the Dutch Symbolist movement, would have been concerned with the inner, spiritual meaning of the world around him. The quick pencil sketches and color notations add an emotional and experiential aspect, inviting us to consider how we perceive and document our environments. It's a work that challenges traditional landscape art by bringing the artist’s personal annotations into the composition. By prompting questions about progress and preservation, this drawing invites a quiet reflection on the changes around us.
