This is Nadar's compilation of sixteen portraits of Camille-Gabrielle Drunzer, captured with photography, displayed in book form and held in the Rijksmuseum collection. The set of sixteen portraits offers a grid-like composition and, as such, the eye reads individual elements as part of a structural whole. The images, of varying sizes, are unified through Nadar's consistent use of black and white tonality. The semiotic implication is evident in the varying poses, costumes, and expressions of Drunzer. Nadar uses the structural format of the grid to explore themes of identity and representation through repetition and variation, challenging notions of a singular, fixed identity. The portraits operate within a visual and cultural discourse, questioning the stability of the self. The structural and semiotic layering within Nadar's work contributes to an ongoing dialogue around art, identity, and representation.
