This image depicts Simeon Stylites, made by Orthodox Icons. Simeon, who lived in the fourth and fifth centuries, took the concept of removing oneself from society to an extreme. Here, Simeon is raised above the world, literally dwelling on top of a pillar. Flanking him are two angels, who seem to mediate between the divine and the earthly. At the bottom of the pillar is what appears to be a woman, clinging to the column, in what is perhaps an act of supplication or a plea for connection. Simeon's actions, of course, raise questions about the nature of piety. Is holiness achieved through isolation, or through engagement? What are the gendered implications of Simeon’s withdrawal from earthly life and the contrasting, active participation of the woman at the base of the pillar? Ultimately, this image invites us to reflect on the various ways individuals seek meaning and purpose in their lives, either by separating from, or connecting with the world around them.
