This Orthodox icon presents us with the figure of Holy Wisdom, or Hagia Sophia, surrounded by divine figures. At the top we see a Hetoimasia or empty throne that represents Christ’s second coming. Note how Sophia is depicted as an angel on a throne, flanked by Mary and John the Baptist. The throne, an ancient symbol of power, echoes through time, from pharaonic Egypt to imperial Rome, signifying authority and divine right. We see a similar motif, for example, in representations of enthroned Madonnas, where Mary’s maternal role is merged with the regal. The icon speaks to a deeper human desire to connect with the divine, to find wisdom in the face of the unknown. The repetition and adaptation of these symbols across cultures are evidence of our collective unconscious, a shared reservoir of archetypes that continue to influence our artistic expression and psychological experience. As we contemplate the icon, we are reminded that the quest for wisdom is timeless, an ongoing cycle of rediscovery and reinterpretation.
