François Desprez created this drawing, “Man uit Portugal,” sometime between 1500 and 1600. Notice how the artist employed a formal approach, relying on line and composition to convey information. The figure, centrally placed, dominates the composition, his form elongated and upright, commanding our attention. The lines are used sparingly, yet they delineate form and texture with surprising detail. The etching technique captures the texture of the man’s robes and the intricate patterns of the border. The stark contrast of black lines on the white ground emphasizes the subject's presence, casting a sense of clarity to the otherwise intricate detail. In terms of semiotics, the way this man is represented would be instantly recognisable. From his dress to his stance, every element serves as a signifier. The inscription, acting as a caption, anchors the meaning, identifying him and adding to our understanding of the cultural codes embedded in the artwork. These codes invite us to decode the image based on historical context.
