Curatorial notes

Hendrik Sluyter created this portrait of Joost van den Vondel using etching and possibly other techniques. Sluyter, born in 1839, lived through a time of significant social and political change. The portrait captures Vondel, a celebrated Dutch poet and playwright from the 17th century. He is seen here in a moment of contemplation, quill in hand, surrounded by the tools of his trade. Vondel’s works often explored themes of religious and political freedom, reflecting the turbulent times in which he lived. He converted to Catholicism later in life, a controversial decision that spoke to the internal battles that so often mark a life. This image provides insight into the cultural values of the Netherlands and the reverence for intellectual and artistic figures. Sluyter’s choice to depict Vondel in this way reflects a desire to connect with and celebrate the nation’s rich cultural past. It reminds us of the power of art and literature to shape our understanding of ourselves and the world around us.
