Curatorial notes

Jan Vrolijk made this etching of a cow by a riverbank sometime between 1861 and 1894. Born in the Netherlands in 1846, Vrolijk lived during a time of immense social change, with the rise of industrialization transforming the relationship between humans and nature. The cow stands calmly in the foreground, its mottled coat rendered in delicate detail. In the background, the riverbank fades into a hazy distance. The solitary cow evokes a sense of pastoral tranquility, yet it also speaks to the changing landscape of the Netherlands, where agriculture was both celebrated and threatened by modernization. Vrolijk captures the essence of rural life and its connection to national identity. The cow, a symbol of nourishment, becomes an emblem of a disappearing way of life, inviting us to reflect on the cultural values we associate with the land and our place within it.
