Chris Lebeau created "Wandbespanning met dessin "Wilde Vlucht"" using dye on fabric; an artwork about repetition and pattern, which gets me thinking about the nature of artistic practice, the balance between planning and improvisation. There's something so calming and orderly about the rows and columns here. It's like a garden viewed from above. The material itself, the fabric, has a tactile quality, like something you want to reach out and touch. Up close you see the weave and the delicate lines of the pattern, which are actually tiny figures. The light green is soft and muted, like the light filtered through leaves. It feels very calming, like something by Hilma af Klint, and perhaps the title suggests a freedom that the artist was also exploring through the use of abstract form. Ultimately, it's up to us to decide how to interpret it.
