Nagasawa Rosetsu painted "Strange Mountain in a Moonlit Night" with ink on paper, a traditional approach deeply rooted in Japanese artistic practice. The magic here lies in the subtle dance between ink and paper. Rosetsu coaxes the ink to bleed and blur, creating a hazy atmosphere where the moon glows softly above the ghostly mountain. Think about the artist's hand: each brushstroke, each controlled drip, contributes to the overall effect. It’s a testament to his mastery that he achieves so much with such a minimal palette. This isn't just about depicting a scene; it's about capturing a feeling, a mood. Rosetsu shows his deep understanding of the materials. In doing so, he elevates his work beyond mere representation, inviting us to contemplate the interplay of light, shadow, and form, challenging our notions of what constitutes skillful art.

Rosetsu’s skillful use of ink wash poignantly evokes a hazy moonlit autumn sky. Reaching toward the sky are curlicues of what may be mist or ocean waves or even obscured mountain cliffs. While studying under Maruyama Ōkyo, whose Monkey Hanging from a Tree is also in this exhibition, Rosetsu developed an eccentric painting style and is highly regarded in Japan today.
