Editor: This hanging scroll, "Leaping Carp," possibly from 1868 by Nakajima Raisho, really strikes me with its determined upward movement. One carp is leaping, while another is heading up through the waterfall. What do you see in this piece? Curator: The imagery of the carp leaping up a waterfall is heavily laden with symbolism in East Asian art. Think of the cultural memory associated with this image – perseverance, overcoming obstacles, and achieving one's goals, echoing the Chinese legend of the dragon gate. Do you feel that resonance when you look at the carp? Editor: Absolutely. It feels incredibly aspirational. The carp are striving. Is there a deeper connection between the waterfall itself and the carp’s journey? Curator: The waterfall isn't just a backdrop; it’s a crucible. Water, in many spiritual traditions, represents purification and transformation. The carp ascending through it isn't just physically moving upward but undergoing a spiritual test. Their scales might even evoke armor. Do you perceive a psychological dimension to their ascent? Editor: That's insightful! It's like a visual representation of resilience and self-improvement. It also emphasizes their determination as a potent psychological trait. Curator: Precisely. And remember that symbols evolve. Later interpretations link it to career success or even academic achievement. So while the surface might show fish and water, beneath it flows a river of meaning built through history and cultural context. Editor: I've definitely gained a richer appreciation for the depth behind the imagery. This is more than just a painting; it’s a narrative. Curator: Indeed, and narratives have power to inspire, challenge, and ultimately, connect us across time and culture.

One carp emerges vertically from splashing waves at the center of the bottom of the piece. A second is obscured but visible leaping perfectly vertically behind falling water at the top center. Black ink streaks suggest the falling water. The back/dorsal side of the fish, two eyes, and fins are symmetrically centered and viewed from the top.
