This is Radiant Ellipse 3-65 by Edna Andrade. I like to imagine Andrade standing in front of the canvas with a brush loaded with bright pigment. She carefully applies each stripe, slowly constructing a vibrant field of color and pattern. You can see how the bands of orange, green, and blue pulsate, creating an optical illusion of movement, and the precision with which each line is rendered—it's so impressive. It makes me think about what it must have been like for her in the studio, calibrating color, and form with such clarity. That radiating burst of yellow and orange in the center—I keep thinking about sunrises, maybe sunbeams filtering through the leaves. It’s a bit like the Op art of Bridget Riley, but with this incredible warmth. All these painters, from different generations, are in an ongoing conversation, working out pictorial problems and inspiring new ways of seeing. They demonstrate that painting, at its core, can be a deeply embodied expression. It embraces ambiguity and uncertainty, and it invites endless interpretation.
