Monique Orsini made this untitled painting sometime after 1937 with paint, probably oils or acrylics, that she really let loose with. You can tell she wasn't afraid to let the medium do its thing. What I love about this piece is how the heavy strokes of crimson and black give it this explosive, almost floral energy. The texture isn't trying to hide, it's right there on the surface, thick and juicy. Look at the lower left, that swirling vortex of dark paint, it feels like you could reach out and stir it. It doesn't look laboured, it's direct and intuitive. Orsini reminds me of Joan Mitchell, both fearlessly wielding color and gesture to create these immersive fields of feeling. It's like they’re both saying, "Here, feel this!" You know, art isn't about answers, it's about keeping the conversation alive, swirling, and messy.
