This is "Phase - Drawing 1 (Topology 14)" by Nobuo Sekine, and it seems to have been made with pencil and paint on paper. I love how Sekine embraces the act of art-making as a process, a conversation between medium and mind. There's something really lovely about the tension between the flat plane of the red background and the almost photorealistic rendering of the form. The rendering of the gray portion is achieved with such precision, that the whole composition starts to read like a surreal dance between dimensions. Look at how the shadow of the loop is meticulously crafted, adding depth where there is none. I'm reminded of some of Lucio Fontana's slashed canvases, where he created a literal opening onto another space. Sekine shares that impulse, opening up a space for the viewer to project their own interpretations. It's not about answers, but about possibilities, about the ongoing dialogue that art sparks across time and space.
