John McCracken made this ‘Warp Drive’ sometime in his career using polyester resin and fiberglass, and I love how the surface is so smooth and reflective it’s almost like an otherworldly object. McCracken’s forms often seem to challenge the boundaries between sculpture and painting. I’m especially drawn to how the red is applied so flawlessly that it transforms the sculpture into a portal, a kind of minimalist hyper-dimensional doorway. It reminds me of some of Donald Judd’s work, with its commitment to simple, geometric forms. But McCracken’s color choices, and that dreamy, glossy finish, give it a personality all its own. In both artists you see a conversation about space, form, and how we perceive them, pushing the boundaries of what art can be.
