Curatorial notes

Vilhelm Lundstrom made this drawing of a standing nude woman, turned to the right, at an unknown date, with pencil on paper. It’s all about the process of looking, and finding the simplest way to describe what you see. Here, the material aspects are reduced to their essence. The pencil lines are thin and delicate, almost tentative, as if Lundstrom is feeling his way around the form. The shading is minimal, just enough to suggest volume and depth. The way the head is drawn, with the intersecting lines, reminds me a little of Picasso, but the overall effect is much more gentle and vulnerable. Look how the line trails off into nothing in places, creating a sense of incompleteness. It's a study in seeing and not-seeing, a reminder that art is as much about what you leave out as what you put in. The conversation continues.
