Vilhelm Lundstrom made this sketch of a standing nude woman, seen from the front, with pencil on paper. Look at the sureness of the lines, and the overall simplicity of the piece, you can imagine him working quickly, getting the whole figure down in just a few minutes. I wonder what it was like for Lundstrom, sitting in front of his model, deciding which lines to commit to paper. See how he indicates tone with short hatched marks? The shading on the inner thigh, for example. It’s quite subtle but gives such a feeling of depth and roundness. I think about other artists who were working with similar themes - think of Matisse’s line drawings. Ultimately, artists are always responding to each other, aren't they? It’s a big conversation across time. I feel that this drawing shows us how even a few simple lines can suggest so much, a real sense of the body. What do you think?
