This is a pen and wash drawing by van Lochteren entitled “Trophy with Globe and Sheet Music”. It’s an allegory, a symbolic representation of ideas, which were often commissioned for public institutions or private collections during the Dutch Golden Age. The drawing presents a globe, sheet music, and books. The book titled “History” at the bottom, might be a symbolic expression of Dutch intellectual and artistic achievement during the 17th century, a period marked by its global trade, scientific advancements, and cultural flourishing. It might also represent the history of Dutch Art. The eagle atop, framing the scene with a crescent moon, might reference the Dutch East India Company, which used similar symbolism in its branding. The VOC’s trading empire contributed significantly to the Dutch economy. Understanding the cultural and institutional contexts of the time enables us to interpret such images as reflections on Dutch national identity, cultural pride, and economic power. Researching emblems, company branding and their use in the art of the period might help to shed further light on this drawing.
