Rosalind Solomon made this black and white photograph called New York, capturing a tender and intimate moment. The image has a grainy texture, a quality that gives it a tactile, almost painterly feel. Look at the way the light falls across the subject's arms and the cat's fur; it's so subtle, yet it defines their forms with a beautiful clarity. The tonal range is incredible, from the deep shadows to the bright highlights, each shade telling its own story. Notice the way the figure is embracing themself, hugging in, it is a form of self-portraiture, but also about the cat. The way the photograph is composed, it reminds me of Nan Goldin's raw and personal snapshots, but with a touch more formality. Both artists capture this incredible intensity in everyday moments, turning them into something deeply moving and universal. To me, this work is about vulnerability, connection, and the quiet beauty of ordinary life.
