Jim Goldberg made "Dee Dee (also Street Map #3)" using photography, capturing a moment of introspection. I wonder what it was like for Goldberg to be in the room with Dee Dee, witnessing and then framing this private moment. The composition, with the arm reaching in from the side, is like a forceful, almost violent gesture, that throws Dee Dee’s vulnerability into sharp relief. It makes me think about the ethics of seeing, and how photographers, like painters, are always making choices about what to show, and what to leave out. What is it like to expose someone in this way? I am reminded of the work of Diane Arbus. Ultimately, the conversation between artists is timeless, and the act of bearing witness is a testament to our shared humanity.
