Ay-O created "Fouji Yama (24 Rainbow Gradation)" exploring the concept of the rainbow as a symbol of utopian ideals and the potential for art to transform perception. Ay-O was a key member of the Fluxus movement in the 1960s, a radical, international community of artists. Here we see how Ay-O uses the image of Mount Fuji to create a landscape of vibrant colors. It is impossible not to see the influence of the social upheaval during the 60s and 70s with calls for social change and experimentation with new forms of expression. Ay-O’s "Rainbow Manifesto" encapsulates this, stating the rainbow as a means to liberate sight. Ay-O has said that he uses rainbows because “it gives people pleasure.” Ay-O encourages us to question the structures that limit our imagination. "Fouji Yama" is an invitation to embrace color as a source of joy and transformation in our own lives.
