Jan Bulthuis created this drawing of the flood of the Diemerzeedijk near Amsterdam in 1776. Bulthuis made this artwork during a time when the Dutch Republic was facing economic challenges and political tensions. In the drawing, we see a community responding to a crisis. Men are shown working together, moving materials to reinforce the dyke. Their collective effort tells a story of resilience and unity. This depiction reflects the communal values that were essential for survival in a land constantly threatened by water. This image prompts us to consider how natural disasters disproportionately affect vulnerable populations, and how community solidarity and collective action are vital in overcoming such challenges. It captures a moment of crisis and highlights the importance of human cooperation in the face of environmental adversity.
