Hendrik Roosing created this print titled 'Departure of the English and Russians from Den Helder' sometime around 1799. It depicts the end of a joint military campaign during a tumultuous period in European history. The print captures the British and Russian forces withdrawing from Den Helder, a Dutch city, after their failed attempt to overthrow the Batavian Republic, a French client state. It provides a glimpse into the complexities of late 18th-century power struggles. The Batavian Republic was itself the result of revolution, influenced by ideals of liberty, equality, and fraternity that emerged from the French revolution. What I find so striking about the print is its depiction of the aftermath of war. The soldiers are disheveled, and exhausted, and their departure signifies the end of a campaign and the reshaping of European power. The print reminds us that behind every grand historical narrative, there are countless personal stories of individuals caught up in events. The print asks us to consider the human cost of war and revolution.
