About this artwork

This photograph, "Stien met hond Snip bij Tennisclub Quick Advantage in Den Haag," was taken by Gerardus Aalbersberg sometime around the turn of the last century. It is an interesting sepia image, the light tones and the darker tones contrast but sit well together as a whole. The photograph makes you think about what the photographer was trying to capture with the image. It’s really interesting to think about how people construct images, or how images construct people. Here, everyone is very smartly dressed in their hats and suit jackets, all sitting together for a group picture. But then the photographer has also captured a woman sitting down with her dog. This woman has her hand resting softly on the head of her dog Snip. I’m left wondering if the artist was influenced by Nadar and his images of famous actors and authors. The photograph opens up a space in the imagination, and makes you think about the people in the image and their stories.
